British Cycling Trail Leader Assessment
Introduction
The British Cycling Trail Leader Assessment (formerly known as British Cycling Level 2 Leadership Training) is a crucial milestone for aspiring leaders in mountain biking, gravel riding, and e-MTB. Developed by Cyclewise in partnership with British Cycling, this certification assesses participants who have completed the Trail Leader Training Course.
The assessment rigorously tests key skills such as navigation, risk assessment, and group management, ensuring that candidates are fully prepared to lead off-road biking activities safely and confidently.
Assessment Overview
During the Trail Leader Assessment, participants demonstrate their ability to make informed decisions under challenging trail conditions, communicate effectively with groups, and apply sound leadership principles. Successfully passing the assessment validates an individual’s skills and signifies their readiness to guide others through diverse off-road terrains. Certified assessors from Cyclewise oversee the process, making the Trail Leader Leadership Assessment a significant achievement for those on the path to becoming skilled and responsible mountain bike leaders, gravel bike leaders and E-MTB leaders.
Practical Assessment
The practical portion of the British Cycling Trail Leader Assessment involves a full-day of riding in the mountains. Each candidate is assigned to lead a section of the assessment route, which can span up to 10 kilometers. Throughout the day, candidates must deliver a smooth, flowing journey while showcasing strong leadership and navigational skills.
The assessment process is informal and designed to support candidates in developing their leadership abilities. You may lead a group consisting of fellow assessment participants or riders serving as role players. This real-world practice is essential for honing your skills as a mountain bike leader.
E-Learning Assignment
Once booked onto the assessment you will receive all the relevant course material. 10 days prior to your assessment you will gain access to the online e-learning module and knowledge check which will take around 1 hour to complete, You can not complete this any earlier than 10 days prior to your assessment and you will not be able to attend the practical assessment if this has not been completed and you will still be charged.

BC Trail Leader Assessment Reviews
Rich was great at putting us all at ease and it did not really feel like an assessment at all, more like a day out with friends.
After my training course, I was inspired to get out there and practice all the things Craig suggested I work on before coming back for assessment. I am so pleased I passed and I am now looking forward to using the award at my centre.
Thanks for a brilliant day – the fact I passed was an added bonus. The location was stunning and I look forward to returning to the lakes to do some more riding.
