Cyclewise British Cycling Mountain Bike (MTB) Level 3 Assessment: The Ultimate Certification for Mountain Bike Leaders
The Cyclewise British Cycling Mountain Bike (MTB) Level 3 Assessment is the premier certification for advanced mountain bike leadership. This intensive evaluation is tailored for individuals who have completed Level 3 training and aim to achieve the highest standard in mountain biking leadership. The assessment covers essential skills such as advanced navigation, risk management, technical riding proficiency, and leadership effectiveness.
What to Expect from the Level 3 Leadership Assessment
Assessment Overview
The British Cycling Level 3 Leadership Assessment is a comprehensive two-day practical evaluation, complemented by a written assignment. This process is designed to refine your skills as a mountain bike leader. During the assessment, you will have the opportunity to lead a group, which may include other candidates or participants fulfilling the role of riders.
Preparation and Timing
We recommend allowing a minimum of 6 weeks between completing your training and undergoing the assessment. However, many candidates find that a period of 8 to 12 months is more beneficial. Following your training course, our Cyclewise tutors will provide feedback on your readiness and identify any areas needing improvement before your assessment. This preparation ensures you are well-equipped to handle the pressures of a Level 3 Mountain Bike Leader role, providing a thorough evaluation in a supportive environment. Additionally, you will receive a personal action plan to guide your future development after the assessment.
Practical Assessment Details
Day 1: Skills Evaluation
Day 1 focuses on evaluating your skills in trail-side repairs, navigation techniques, and handling technical terrain. This initial phase is crucial for assessing your ability to manage and resolve issues on the go.
Day 2: Leadership in Action
Day 2 involves leading a group on a challenging technical route, demonstrating your proficiency in all Level 3 competencies. Specifically, you will lead a 10km section of the route with a maximum ratio of 1:4. Key skills assessed include navigation, route management, and the ability to maintain a safe and enjoyable ride for all participants.
Written Assignment Details
The written assignment is an open book home study task featuring short-answer questions based on the British Cycling Level 3 Mountain Bike Leadership Handbook and additional course resources. After booking, you will receive a questionnaire via email (paper copies are available upon request). Please ensure that you complete and return this questionnaire to Cyclewise no later than seven days before your practical assessment date.

BC Level 3 Assessment Reviews
Wow. Super proud and delighted to have passed this top level award. On the back of my 3 days of training and countless hours of riding, I feel that I have been challenged, tested, and pushed to meet this high standard. I feel that I have really earned this award. Thanks Cyclewise for an incredible journey. Looking forward to making it happen high on the mountains.
The best assessment I have ever done. Getting to ride Helvellyn on the assessment day in amazing weather, riding in technical terrain, and finishing with a steamer journey on Ullswater is a proper Level 3 day out. The assessment met all of my expectations. I can highly recommend cycles – I have completed both my Level 2 and Level 3 awards with Rich, Craig, and Ed and I can not fault them in any way.
Hi Sue and Rich, thanks for an outstanding weekend on the level 3 assessment. Getting tested in actual situations is extremely valuable, and it doesn’t get much more real than that route on Sunday. What an amazing ride!
