The British Cycling Level 3 Leadership training course will qualify you to lead in remote and challenging areas. Undertaking this award will improve your ability to create inspiring and long-lasting journeys on technically difficult and physically demanding trails. Thus giving your clients an exciting yet extremely safe experience.
This is the highest level of MTB Leadership Qualification offered by British Cycling.
To attend, you will need to be proficient in all areas of mountain bike leadership. Most importantly, you should be a highly skilled mountain bike rider with precise navigation skills.
The training course builds upon the skills and knowledge gained at Level 2, with more specific topics covered in depth.
Level 3 Course
Our British Cycling Level 3 Leadership Training course focuses on leading groups in technical terrain and trails of technical difficulty.
The Training Covers The Following Areas –
Advanced trailside repairs
Route planning and navigation strategies for technical terrain
Group management in technical terrain
Managing accidents and emergencies
Promoting hydration and nutrition
Methods for developing attentional focus
Pre-requisites – To Attend The Training Course
• To attend the course you should be at least 18-years-old
• Be fully qualified at Level 2 (or hold TCL or MBL Award)
• You should be an accomplished mountain biker prepared to ride all day in challenging, (up to black-graded) terrain. Be competent at negotiating the typical trail features, where obvious line choices and rollable options are often not available. Required techniques include step-up, bunny-hop, and drop-off skills.
• As well as riding skills, you should be competent in setting a map, taking bearings, and creating flow in a trail environment.
• Also, working knowledge of the variety of mechanical systems on current mountain bikes and is desirable.
• Finally, you must hold a current two day outdoor First Aid certificate.
To demonstrate that you have fulfilled the minimum requirements for training, we require you to send us your up-to-date logbook.
In preparation, you must log at least 30 quality days since the completion of Level 2. The majority of these should be within the last 12-18 months. At least 12 of these rides should be as a group leader or assistant leader. If possible, please complete these rides in a variety of areas in the UK.
How Do I Register For The Course With BC?
You can register for the BC Mountain Bike L3 Leadership programme as long as you are a qualified Trail Cycle Leader (TCL) or Mountain Bike Leader (MBL) through the MBLA. British Cycling will provide you with the Level 2 Mountain Bike Leadership Award training materials. These include a manual, logbook, and free British Cycling ride membership valid for one year. You will also receive log-in details for the online learning programme, ‘NSPCC Child Protection Awareness in Sport and Active Leisure’. It is a requirement to complete this as part of your pre-course work. You can register here
